Popular Nigerian singer, Davido has reacted to the fire
incident at the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation in
Abuja.
We had reported that some rooms at the office of the AGF at the Treasure House Abuja caught fire on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters have put out the inferno but the cause is still unknown.
There have been insinuations that the inferno is suspicious,
especially at a time when huge financial contributions were made to the
government to support the fight against Coronavirus.
Recall that after Nigeria confirmed its first case of COVID-19, many
wealthy Nigerians and the private sector made donations publicly to
assist the government.
The account was set up under the Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19.
Davido, whose father contributed to the relief fund took to his
Twitter page demanding that the government accounts for each kobo spent.
His post read:
“Make dem return our money oh, which one be say office don burn.
“They must account for each kobo.”
Clem Agba, minister of state for budget and planning, says
the fire that gutted the office of the accountant-general of the
federation (AGF) did not destroy any record.
On Wednesday, fire broke out at the Treasury House, a building housing the AGF’s office.
Officials of the Federal Fire Service and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were able to put out the fire after about an hour later.
Many had alleged that the fire was an attempt to cover up wrongdoing by the federal government.
But speaking with journalists after inspecting the affected offices
in Abuja, Agba said they are yet to take an inventory of what was
destroyed in the fire but all the government’s financial transactions
were intact.
The minister said the fire was caused by a spark in one of the air conditioners (AC) on the fourth floor.
He said:-
“We have gone round the rooms and offices where the fire
affected, and I am glad to report that our data Centre where all our
records are kept are fully intact,” he said.
“There is no destruction, so we haven’t lost any record. As a
government I want to assure you that our records are intact, a few
documents are burnt, we haven’t started recovery to check what actually
burnt, but all our financial transactions are intact.
“We would be doing a full scale investigation using the right professionals to determine exactly what happened.”
Also speaking, Ahmed Idris, AGF, said there would be a “thorough” investigation of the incident.
“For emphasis, our data Centre is intact, no harm in any way except
for the cooling system which we are now working hard to put back to
operation,” Idris said.
“We are also glad there is no casualty.”

A Taxi driver was reportedly beaten to death yesterday by
security operatives, for carrying passengers who were not wearing face
masks.
An eyewitness @ayebechristopher, revealed that the incident occurred at Marian in Calabar, Cross River State’s capital.
He said the driver who was wearing a face mask when he was stopped,
was beaten by security operatives till he collapsed. He was confirmed
dead thereafter.
The Instagram user wrote;
WHO said only wear Mask if you’re sick or taking care of a
sick person but the Governor of CRS with his own eye service, so
they’ll say he’s fighting Corona too came out and said you must wear
Nose Mask else you stay indoors, (that’s actually not the problem) but
why not give the Law Enforcement Agents you’re using proper orientation.
Now they’ve killed someone. Shey you’re happy now ? Is that what
other States with Covid-19 cases are doing ? No confirmed case in
Calabar yet and you’ve started killing people. This is really sad. The
mask you even said you’ll distribute was only distributed in Government
House. Na wa ooo

Seven people who had previously tested positive for
coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja
have recovered from the infection.
FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, announced on Tuesday, April 7, 2020,
that the seven are set to be discharged after testing negative for the
virus.
“I am delighted to announce that the first set of
patients, totaling 7, are ready to be discharged after their final tests
results returned negative,” he said.
The FCT has the second-highest number of confirmed cases in Nigeria
with 48 in total. Two people have died from infection in the capital
city.
Bello said the medical team is working hard to ensure the recovery and discharge of the remaining 39 patients.
“We cannot thank them (health workers) enough for their efforts and
we will always continue to encourage and support them,” he said.
The minister called on FCT residents to cooperate with the government
in its fight to contain the spread of the virus, especially by obeying
an ongoing stay-at-home order that commenced last week.
He said any breach of guidelines by members of the public is a danger
to public health and will be dealt with under the provision of the law.
Nigeria has recorded a total of 238 coronavirus cases in 14 states and the FCT, as of April 6.
